He says: "I was always chasing the big money. It does not matter how much you win — it ultimately goes back to the bookies. I didn't have a house and was living at home with my mum while earning good money so it was easy to get credit. While he was working away for a couple of weeks the excitement would build up for the weekend he would spend at home.
After getting a tip he placed the high bet on a horse which then got beaten on the line. While he dreamed he would be able to make the money to put down a deposit for a house instead Nick would find himself chasing his losses. In his 20s Nick told himself the only person he was hurting was himself but then, at the age of 29, he met his wife. For a year Nick managed to hide his gambling problem by only betting when he was travelling. But then Nick — originally from the Gorseinon area of Swansea but now living in Morriston — started to struggle with all the debt he had accumulated and asked his wife to take out a loan.
It was around this time the couple had their first child and Nick hoped that the moment he was responsible for someone else the gambling would stop — but it didn't. After speaking to a financial adviser the couple decided to declare bankruptcy and lost their house.
You are always chasing the big win. He adds: "I used to walk in the bookies and have this fantasy of doing great things, winning large amounts of money, and being able to buy houses and go on fantastic holidays and buy nice cars. In Nick ended up with a theft conviction after stealing to fund his gambling. At the time he was doing very well — back with his wife, following the GA programme — when he was offered a job as a bar manager in a club his mum chaired. However a few months into the job he found himself betting his wages and taking money from the safe.
Nick admitted what he had done and was convicted of theft for which he received a suspended sentence and a community punishment. It was around this time Nick's mental health deteriorated and he ended up trying to take his own life. He ended up spending three months in a mental health facility in Nick — who paid the money he had stolen back over the course of two years — has split up with his wife five or six times and has had two mental breakdowns because of his addiction as well as making two attempts on his own life.
He managed not to gamble for two years, slowly rebuilding his life, but in the relationship with his wife broke down again and after a night of heavy drinking he tried to end his own life again. Luckily a dog walker went past just in time and managed to talk him out of it. I was diagnosed with PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Nick has now been gambling free for 18 months and follows the GA programme. He and his wife are back together and she controls all the money. He also campaigns to increase awareness around gambling problems and was in Parliament a few weeks ago as well as being a fundraiser for Gambling with Lives — a charity set up by the families and friends of young men who have taken their own lives as a direct result of gambling.
I want to change the culture of gambling in this country because it nearly killed me and it has killed people. Nick feels he was lucky online gambling didn't exist when he was betting, adding he feels big changes are needed to overhaul the industry. Nick, who is about to start a psychology and counselling degree, says he will always be a recovering gambling addict because even if he doesn't have urges to bet now they could come back.
Nevertheless, he is looking forward to the future as he plans to spend the rest of his life campaigning and supporting people with gambling problems. Trained advisers are there ready to be contacted for free around the clock days a year on It runs the National Gambling Helpline and also offers face-to-face counselling.

Author Chris Stringman gets down and dirty with the industry, detailing through personal experience, how "SB Bookies" lure in their marks through marketing with dreams of making a small fortune all the while they are lining their own pockets with the eventual losses of just about everyone dumb enough to give it a go.
Stringman illustrates how financial spread betting is essentially gambling, and that the house always wins in the end. His writing style is informed, cutting and direct -- a no-holds-barred explanation that gambling in just about any arena at anything more than a minimum stake for entertainment purposes is a terrible idea, and you'll end up the sucker for having done it. This book is excellent fodder for the addicted gambler, a reminder of the folly of believing you can beat the house.
It has helped me personally by offering straight-forward reminders at every page turn that gambling is as big of a waste of time as it is money. The high stakes gambler who thinks they have the edge will likely go broke, as the end result for the addicted gambler often results in self-destruction. Stringman offers the thought process of why otherwise intelligent folks tend to ignore those pitfalls and take such an endless plunge into the world of gambling.
But he also offers his own personal story of losing a small fortune before quitting the game entirely and later writing his book as proof that a gambler can come to his senses, stop chasing the losses, and resume the normalcy of a fulfilling existence.
For those who don't know much about the stock market, Stringman presents a detailed though occasionally sleepy description of the inner workings of financial spread betting, but there's enough anectodal wit and cultural reference intertwined to help the reader get through. Overall, I rate the book an important read for anyone contemplating a foray into financial spread betting, as well as an addicted gambler who needs a proper dose of reality to help them realize there's a better way to live.
Essential reading. The author tells how it happened to him and in all probability, will happen to you! He explains just how they draw you in, the psychology of it all and why you will make a loss. It is not only a book about spreadbetting but about all forms of gambling: casino, online, fruit machines, etc.
Costs you Saves you from financial and emotional suicide. Yeah, we are a brainwashed country alright! See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Whatever you've been betting on in the past, read this and you won't bet on anything in the future. This personal account tells how the author got sucked into the gambling delusion then describes how he and anyone else can get themselves out of it. Even though it deals with a serious subject, it is actually incredibly humorous! Whether you are a gambler yourself or the partner of one, it is definitely worth a read.
Could save you a lot of money and a lot of grief! The author has also stated that all money he makes from the book will go to charity. Its not bad. He doesn't go into great a deal regarding the reasons why he bet. He talks a lot about the bets that he took but not the real reasons why he took them.
For me it seems he was just skimming the top off the custard. I wanted to get a great insight of the reasons why he took his positions. Was he using fundamentals, or was it technical analysis. The one thing this book did do was put an end to my 8 year spread betting habit. He does make sense when he explains the profits these companies make and the amount of people they employ.
They can only afford to do this if 90 percent of the punters are losing. I've wasted an incredible amount of time doing this Report abuse. A very effective warning about the reality of betting. Chris drills home a sobering message about who the real winners are in the gambling world: it isn't the punters. The majority are set up to lose. Stats on the bookies' profit margins are sobering. Anyone who is starting to find that their gambling is turning into an addiction should start reading this now.
Chris' writing is raw and feels unedited, but this brings a power and honesty to his message. A courageous book to write. Top marks to him for getting it out there. The book was great and i read it over 2 days. Explains in details the various forms of gambling with their ups and downs.
One person found this helpful. How often do we hear the statement "so-and-so has changed my life"? Far too often. It's used far too cheaply. Rarely does something actually have such an effect on you that it changes the path of your life, makes you question your core beliefs, and gives you hope when you were almost at the edge of your own sanity. Does that opening statement sound a little dramatic?
Probably does to the outside reader. But I was at the edge of my own sanity and not knowing how to function in my day-to-day life. Then I read this book and now I am firmly on the road to recovery. Let me enlighten you a little. For the last two years I have been "trading" on the stock market. I haven't been doing this in the traditional way of buying and selling stocks at market value.
I'm not going to bore you with the mechanics of how this works, you can research that yourself. There are numerous websites and YouTube videos showing you how easy it is to make thousands from SB. Sure, you will read the odd story of how someone makes a living out of SB, but you do not hear the numerous stories of those that have lost big. I, like Chris Stringman, lost big. Money that I will never see again. So, over the past two years, I have lost an amount that equates to the average salary of the average hard working person in the UK.

By 37, he had become disenchanted with his job as a teacher at a school in Hampshire — and was having a form of midlife crisis, desperate to feel more special and successful than he was.
Gambling gave me hope. They are on the periphery, laying bets on how much prices will rise or fall — a guessing game which Chris says demands no more skill than playing a fruit machine. When you spread bet you can have all the graphs, digits and news in front of you.
It gave me a false feeling of control. When they moved in together, the system was already set up so that Claudia never had reason to be suspicious. All my trading statements were online. Chris found that the toilet became his refuge when he needed to concentrate in private. Yet five years into his habit, it was becoming clear to Chris that the emotional toll was becoming greater than any financial loss. I could never relax.
His fears that gambling would never make him the winner he wanted to be were also brought into even sharper focus by the fact that, around this time, Claudia told him she was pregnant. If I stopped then, I knew I could absorb my losses. But gradually, over the months that followed, he started feeling lighter, as if a weight had been lifted from his body — and he transferred all the focus he had put into gambling into being a father to his son, Finn, who is now three.
He decided not to tell Claudia what he had done, preferring to process it all by writing a book looking at what buttons gambling pushes. When he had worked through that aftermath, Chris decided to tell Claudia what he had done.

But more often than not you'll lose, and when you won't stop you could easily burn everything you have in desperation. There's a reason why the state has ads for help for the gambling addicted even though they were the ones to legalize and essentially run it in the first place. My husband sports bets all the time he says it's his job but yet his mother pays all his bills because he loses all the dam time and then he blames others for his losing.
I can't tell how much he's losing 1,,s of dollars for years. If it was a real job he would have been fired a be long time ago. It has ruined our relationship in so many ways, he can win but loses it right back, he can't control himself, he said he is not addicted only people who play poker and slot machines are degenerate gramblers he's delunsional.
I am 25 i started gambling when i was 18 and now i just cant stop. I have self excluded myself from the casino, i have seen a therapist, i have read a book on how to stop gambling but i still keep gambling every last paycheck until i am flat broke. My father is a gambler and he lost his family, many properties and everything in his name to gambling. My mother is well off but i can see it is hurting her to see me go down the same path as my father. I am not a complete idiot i went to good schools, showed promise in my education and attended university for a time.
I wish i could stop and make a life formyself but it just keeps going on and on Money, Properties, and even your relationship to your family or love ones will be at risk. That's why if ever you gamble and still have some senses in you, I really suggest that you should stop it. Because we don't know, anytime soon, the money you have worked hard or received , properties, and even family will just vanish in an instant.
Many people can support this opinion. I have seen people play and they just suffer through and waste a lot of their money just on gambling. If you need money, get a good enough job and work hard to earn it by yourself.
Don't get addicted by it, It is a very very bad habit indeed. BUT if people are stupid then they will easily fall into the trap but seriously it just depends on how smart the person is to let gambling take over their life or ignore it. Gambling is a recreational game. Although, some do get addicted, that would be like an obese man eating butter. He is addicted to butter and eats it all the time. It is bad for him but he has gotten so use to butter and eats it so much he has ran out.
Gamblers Anonymous is a group where men and women can join together to address their gambling issues. I had finally accepted who I was and what I was — a compulsive gambler. I know how hard it can be. But getting help was the best thing I ever did.

Now Chris had only 15 minutes before dinner to secretly check the spread bet he had placed on how the Dow Jones industrial average would react to an impending announcement on the US economy. The opening of his new book, Win. It is not only a morality tale about how spread-betting companies glamorise and draw punters in to a form of gambling that Chris says is no more sophisticated than a game of Play Your Cards Right.
Chris describes a life of subterfuge: coming to bed late on the pretext of emptying the dishwasher; getting up early so that he could lock himself in the bathroom in order to bet. In fact, he was a dream customer — a single man with his own home and no dependents.
He also had a healthy bank account containing thousands of pounds doing very little. The deciding factor, however, was how he felt about his life.
